30-й президент США [President, U.S.] (в 1923-29). Республиканец [Republican]. Окончил колледж Амхерст [Amherst College], с 1897 практиковал как адвокат. Приобрел национальную известность, будучи губернатором штата Массачусетс (1919-20), когда решительно подавил забастовку бостонской полиции [Boston police strike] и заявил, что "ни у кого, нигде и никогда нет права устраивать забастовки вопреки интересам общественной безопасности" ["There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time"]. В 1921-23 - вице-президент США [Vice-President, U.S.], занял пост президента после смерти У. Гардинга [Harding, Warren Gamaliel] (1923). На этом посту стремился ограничить рост государственного аппарата, не допустить вмешательства правительства в частное предпринимательство. В 1924 с триумфом переизбран, но в 1928 отказался выдвигать свою кандидатуру повторно. Автор афоризма "Основной бизнес Америки - это бизнес" [The business of America is business] (1925). Отличался немногословностью, за что получил прозвище "Молчаливый Кэл" ["Silent Cal"]
